Innovative Learning Environments
Teaching and learning takes place in newly built innovative learning environments (ILEs). Our ILEs are arranged in learning communities, each being the equivalent of three or four classrooms. A learning community comprises a large open space, a large breakout room, a small breakout room and a wet area. This provides an opportunity to work collaboratively, drawing on the strengths of others, whether that be teacher strengths or learner strengths. It also allows the different spaces to be used flexibly and tailored to the specific, planned learning experiences.
The teina | junior campus was opened in February 2016. It has four learning communities, an administration building and a sports hall.
The tuakana | senior campus was opened in October 2020. It has four learning communities, three music suites, a library, an innovation and creativity centre (for STEAM learning – Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics), an administration building, and a hall.
School Halls
The teina | junior hall has a sports floor with basketball markings and is ideally suited to physical activity. It is especially useful for running the Perceptual Motor Programme (PMP), a programme designed to develop muscle strength, agility and coordination in our youngest learners.
The tuakana | senior hall has a generously-sized elevated stage and is equipped with high-quality audio-visual technologies including a sound desk, stage lighting, and data show projection. Teachers favour this space for the performing arts, and dance.

Music Suites
There are three music suites on the tuakana | senior campus. These are used for private music tuition by our itinerant music teachers and also by our classroom teachers. One of the studios has been set up for green screening and is used by independent learners working on specific creative projects.
Harakeke - Creativity and Innovation Centre
This multipurpose room is complete with a full working kitchen, plenty of storage for technology resources, and storage for our many musical instruments and music resources. Teachers can use this dedicated space to deliver quality STEAM learning experiences, that is, learning in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths.
Library
The school library is located on the tuakana | senior campus and is incorporated into the newly built learning block. The library features unique tiered shelving that doubles as seating, a feature wall constructed from recycled floorboards from the school built in 1945, and cushion-covered bench seats in a sunny alcove for recreational reading. The library has a broad collection of fiction and non-fiction texts to cater for the needs and interests of all learners.
Gardens
Kaitiakitanga is modelled and encouraged. The school has a developing orchard that includes grape vines, fruit trees and feijoa hedges. Herbs and vegetables are grown in newly constructed garden beds, some of which are dedicated to plants that attract butterflies as a means of sustaining selected butterfly species.
Hard Courts
Each campus has a variety of hard courts including padder tennis courts, netball courts and basketball courts. The superior quality basketball hoops on the tuakana | senior campus are enjoyed by our school community as well as the wider Warkworth community.
Playing Fields
The junior campus has a mix of Tiger Turf and grass playing fields. This means outdoor play isn’t restricted after periods of heavy rainfall.
The tuakana | senior campus makes use of Shoesmith Domain during recreational break times and for physical education lessons. It is a sand-based, well-drained field that allows outdoor activity all year round.
